Top 10 World Series of the last 30 years

10) 1996 - Yankees 4, Braves 2: Atlanta won the first two games of the series in dominating fashion on the road. The Braves had a three-run lead in the eighth inning of Game 4, but Jim Leyritz's homer tied it up and the Yankees went on to win in 10. They won Game 5 by a 1-0 final, and held on at home, winning Game 6 for the franchise's first title since 1978. 9) 1993 - Blue Jays 4, Phillies 2: Philadelphia had a chance to even the series in Game 4, but Toronto scored six runs in the eighth to win 15-14, the highest-scoring game in postseason history. Curt Schilling's complete-game shutout in Game 5 sent the series back to Toronto. Joe Carter came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth in Game 6, and trailing by two runs, he connected on a three-run homer to end the game and give the Blue Jays their second consecutive title. 8) 1987 - Twins 4, Cardinals 3: The home team won every game in the series, with Minnesota taking the first two, St. Louis the next three and the Twins winning two do-or-die games to earn the franchise's first title since 1924, when they were the Washington Senators. 7) 1997 - Marlins 4, Indians 3: Florida became the first wild card team to reach the World Series and came up against a powerful Cleveland team. Game 3, featuring wind chills of less than 20 degrees, finished 14-11 in favor of the Marlins after heading into the ninth tied at seven. The Indians forced Game 7 and had the chance to win, but Jose Mesa blew the save in the bottom of the ninth. In the 11th, Edgar Renteria singled up the middle to score Craig Counsell, giving the Marlins a World Series title in just their fifth season of existence. 6) 2002 - Angels 4, Giants 3: Ah, 2002. That magical October when Rally Monkey and ThunderStix were etched in baseball lore. With the chance to sew up the series in Game 6, the Giants blew a 5-0 lead, highlighted by Scott Speizio's three-run homer in the seventh and Troy Glaus' two-run double to give the Angels the lead in the eighth. Anahaim would win Game 7. Barry Bonds hit .470 in the series with four homers and 13 walks. 5) 1985 - Royals 4, Cardinals 3: This series was best known for a controversial call in Game 6. St. Louis led 1-0 in the ninth with the chance to clinch, and Jorge Orta was called safe at first by umpire Don Dnkinger to lead off the inning. A lengthy argument took place on the field and replays appeared to show that Orta was indeed out. The Royals rallied in the inning, winning on Dane Iorg's two-run single. Kansas City kept the momentum going in Game 7, winning by an 11-0 final, overcoming a 3-1 series deficit to win the title. 4) 2011 - Cardinals 4, Rangers 3: Texas was one strike away from winning it all in Game 6, when David Freese hit a two-run triple to tie the game and send it to extras. Texas took another two-run lead in the 10th, but the Cardinals rallied again to extend the game. Freese led off the 11th with a solo homer to force Game 7. The Rangers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but St. Louis answered with two of their own, going on to win 6-2 for its 11th World Series title. 3) 2001 - Diamondbacks 4, Yankees 3: Leading the series 2-1, Arizona closer Byung-Hyun Kim gave up a two-run homer to Tino Martinez in the bottom of the ninth in Game 4 to tie the game, and Derek Jeter went long in the 10th to win it. In Game 5, Kim blew another two-run lead, with Scott Brosius hitting the game-tying home run and again, the Yankees won in 10. In Game 7, the Yankees held a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the ninth with Mariano Rivera on the hill, who had converted 23 consecutive postseason saves. A single, an error and a double later, the game was tied 2-2. With Luis Gonzalez at the plate and the bases loaded, the Yankees pulled the infield in. Gonzalez, who hit 57 home runs in 2001, blooped a single into short left field, winning the World Series for Arizona. 2) 1986 - Mets 4, Red Sox 3: Boston won Games 1 and 2 in New York before the Mets, who won 108 games, romped in Games 3 and 4. The Red Sox won Game 5, and put themselves in position to win their first World Series since in 1918. Game 6 turned out to be one of the most famous games in the history of baseball. Boston pushed two across in the top of the 10th inning to take a 5-3 lead and the Mets were down to their final out with nobody on base. Gary Carter, Kevin Mitchell and Ray Knight singled, drawing the Mets to within a run. With a runner on third, Mookie Wilson fouled off pitch after pitch, before Bob Stanley finally threw a wild one, allowing Mitchell to score the tying run. With a full count, Wilson hit a dribbler up the first base line that went underneath Bill Buckner's glove allowing the winning run to score. The Red Sox led Game 7 3-0, but the Mets rallied in the sixth and seventh, eventually winning 8-5 for their second World Series title. 1) 1991 - Twins 4, Braves 3: five of the seven games in the 1991 World Series were decided by one run. Atlanta won Game 3 on a walk-off single by Mark Lemke and Game 4 on a walk-off sac fly from Jerry Willard. The Braves also won Game 5 at home, sending the series back to the Metrodome. Kirby Puckett's spectacular catch climbing the wall in the third inning of Game 6 wound up being an afterthought when he hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th to force a decisive Game 7. In Game 7, Jack Morris pitched 10(!) scoreless innings, but the game was tied 0-0 heading into the bottom of the 10th. With the infield pulled in, Gene Larkin came to the plate having not appeared in the series. Larked drilled a ball into deep left-center over the drawn-in outfield to score the winning run, earning the Twins their second title in five seasons.

It just happened and then he was able to play with the pain," Gundy said. "I can only say that it was a pretty amazing performance. I would hate to use that term for a guy or a player on my team that's only a freshman, but for him to finish the game Cheap Nike NFL Jerseys the way he did and run the football and never say a word was really a terrific performance." The two had competed with Clint Chelf for the opening during the spring, after Brandon Weeden was taken in the first round of the NFL draft, with Lunt winning the job. Percy Harvin, Minnesota Vikings take down Tennessee Titans to improve to 4-1

MINNEAPOLIS -- Percy Harvin gave Minnesota another big lift. With Harvin's variety-pack production, Adrian Peterson's post-injury resurgence and a restored defense, the Minnesota Vikings are sure soaring right now. Harvin had one touchdown rushing and another receiving to help the Vikings keep up their commanding start to the season with a 30-7 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. "He's the best player I've ever played with," Peterson said. Harvin caught eight passes for 108 yards for the Vikings (4-1), who have given up a combined 33 points in winning three straight games. Christian Ponder threw his first two interceptions after 143 attempts without one this year, but he still finished 25 for 35 for 258 yards and two scores against the reeling Titans (1-4), the latest team that couldn't contain Harvin. "A beast, that's probably a good way to describe him," Ponder said, adding: "We're going to keep giving him the ball." Adrian Peterson charged his way for 88 yards on 17 carries for the Vikings, another strong performance on his surgically repaired left knee. That was a stark contrast to the 24 yards Chris Johnson managed on 15 tries, often stutter-stepping at the line, trying fruitlessly to find room. "We are who we are. There's no draft coming up. There's no adding more players and getting new coaches," Titans coach Mike Munchak said. "This is the group we have, and with this group we have to play much better." Once again, the Titans couldn't keep handing their franchise runner the ball because they fell too far behind. Matt Hasselbeck, subbing for injured starter Jake Locker, went 26 for 43 for 200 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Most of those gains came near the end of the game with the outcome no longer in doubt. "It's kind of disappointing to be going down the same road every Sunday," Johnson said. Ponder didn't complete a pass longer than 29 yards in any of the first four games, but the Vikings took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter fueled by the long throw that's been missing. Ponder floated a perfect pass up the sideline to Harvin, who hauled in the ball in man-to-man coverage for a 45-yard gain. The fourth-year do-it-all wide receiver then took an inside handoff and pounded his way into the end zone four plays later from 4 yards out. Harvin's second score put the seal on this one, a highlight-reel catch and run to add to his already-impressive collection of video clips. Grabbing a quick swing pass at the line of scrimmage, Harvin used the same hesitation move twice to get overeager defenders to fly past him before bouncing into the end zone. "A couple times they tell me, 'Slow down, I can't catch up,'" Harvin said. "I look at them and laugh and say, 'That's my job.'" Ponder was picked off by Rob Johnson right in front of the goal line at the end of the second quarter and again by Jason Babineaux on the first play of the second half, and with a healthy two-possession lead he settled for low-risk throws for most of the rest of the game. Except early in the fourth quarter, when he fired a 15-yard pass in double coverage that sure-handed tight end Kyle Rudolph hauled in to give the Vikings their highest score of the season. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave had to talk head coach Leslie Frazier into approving that play, since the boss was more concerned about draining the clock. When it worked, Frazier had a huge smile on his face. Harvin had the rare opportunity to take his pads off and watch the last few minutes on the sideline. "We're just going to keep working and keep working," he said, "and hopefully we'll be sitting out a lot of fourth quarters." With their first three-game winning streak since November 2009, the Vikings are rolling, but ever cautious about getting too comfortable. "If you get too excited over a 4-1 start, you'll drop one and you can't get that back," Rudolph said. After finishing 9-7 in Munchak's first season and missing the playoffs by a tiebreaker, the Titans have regressed in year two. They entered the game with a league-most 151 points allowed, and for all the good their two turnovers did their tackling was befitting of a team that was second-to-last in the NFL in yardage allowed through the first quarter of the season. Antoine Winfield picked off an underthrow by Hasselbeck early in the second quarter at the Titans 34-yard line, setting up Blair Walsh's first of three field goals. The turnover came at a price for the Vikings, because rookie safety Harrison Smith was ejected after a tussle between the two teams at the end of the play. One of the officials tugged Smith away from the pile, and Smith responded by shoving him, drawing an automatic 15-yard penalty and the dreaded disqualification. The Vikings put enough pressure on Hasselbeck the rest of the game that the absence of one of their best players in the secondary hardly mattered. When he did get the ball out, it often sailed high or wide past his receiver. "If you swarm to the ball and everybody's having fun playing together, you really can't go wrong," linebacker Chad Greenway said. NOTES: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell attended the game, mingling with tailgating fans before. ... Danielle Kalil, the sister of Vikings rookie LT Matt Kalil, sang the national anthem. ... Peterson rolled his left ankle on the second play of the game, blaming that for distracting his focus. "I came out and did all right in the second half, but I've just got to do better," he said. ... Vikings WR Jerome Simpson was bothered by soreness near his left ankle that kept him from pushing off. ... Titans RB Javon Ringer hurt his left knee and left on a cart in the fourth quarter.
